Active Schools Week 2017 held in Scoil Na Mainistreach was as usual a huge success. The parkrun and the Callaghan Cup Finals took place last weekend and concluded 2 events that had begun during Active Week. Many thanks to all the teachers who helped to organise the wonderful weeks activities for the boys. We hope that the boys enjoyed the many different activities they experienced and might consider continuing with one of the many activities available in the Celbridge area.

The 9th Callaghan Cup Kicked off during Active Schools Week. Played by all boys in 5th class each year the cup commemorates our former Vice Principal Pat Callaghan. Below is a report written by Ms Fitzsimons boys on their experience.
We started the Callaghan Cup on the 10th of May. There were 6 teams they were….. Cork, Galway, Tyrone, Donegal, Mayo, Kerry The runners up were Cork and Mayo. 4th place were Tyrone 3rd were Galway. So, the two teams in the final were……. Donegal and Kerry. Both teams did very well. Here are some of the goal scorers: Ross Flanagan, Cormac O’ Sullivan, Glen Cullinane, Yacom Paun, Jake Whelan and Connor Casey. Also we can’t forget the managers!! Here are the managers for Donegal: Kyle Brennan, Ciaran Darcy. And Kerrys… Killian Browne, Seán Bowes, Jacob McLoughlin. Last of all… A special thanks to the referees David Daly and Eoghan Lynch! And that was our annual Callaghan Cup The teachers, boys and parents from Scoil na Mainistreach weren't going to let a bit of 'drizzle' get in the way of their trip to Castletown parkrun. The boys had been in rigorous training over the last few weeks, practising their "laps" as part of the school's Active Schools Week programme. Everyone had a great morning running around Castletown. The many puddles offered some of our younger runners the chance to make a splash en route! Alan Lawlor (6th class) crossed the line as the first of our boys home. He was only a couple of yards away from catching Mr. Curtin who beat off stiff competition from the other teachers. We were delighted to have so many children from junior infants up to sixth class taking part in this event and we hope that our families continue to attend parkrun on Saturday mornings. As always we would like to thank Castletown parkrun for welcoming us to their event and for the tremendous support they gave to our boys. We look forward to coming back next year J
As part of our ‘Active Schools’ initiative and in an attempt to highlight the importance of physical exercise for children, Scoil na Mainistreach has teamed up with the globally-renowned ‘parkrun’ running event.
Castletown parkrun takes place every Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. and their Event Director, Sharon Ashmore has kindly invited the parents and boys of our school to join them for a ‘children-friendly’ parkrun on Saturday 27th May. We are very excited to have this opportunity and look forward to lots of our students participating in this free event alongside their parents/guardians. We hope to have lots of our boys (accompanied by a guardian if under 11) at this event. If you wish to take part in this event, please follow these steps:
If you or your child are unable/prefer not to run/walk this event, it would be great if you could volunteer instead. parkrun is a community-based initiative and its success depends on the support of volunteers. So all support would be greatly appreciated. If you can volunteer, please make sure that you register with parkrun and email [email protected] to express an interest in volunteering. Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday 27th May (arrive early to warm-up). Please remember that all children under 11 must be within arms-reach of their parents during the event. On the 12th May Sixth Class went to the Snooker Hall in Celbridge. Fergal O’Brien who played in the Crucible (World Championship) would mentor us. We started off by going into the Snooker Hall and Fergal thought us the basics of snooker. After that we went to one of twelve snooker tables and got started. While we played he came around and gave us tips. The snooker tables were 12ft by 6ft. At the end our caretaker Eamon had a match with Fergal. It all came down to the last black ball and Eamon potted it. It was a great day and we recommend it again for next year. We would like to thank Fergal & James for letting us use the Snooker Hall.
At Scoil Na Mainistreach we did hiphop dancing with the dance instructors Adel and Gráinne from Dance LA. Some of the dance moves were really funny. At the start we did a warm up by stretching etc. We did a dance to Ed Sheeran’s song ‘Shape Of You’. In the dance we did awesome moves like Bruno Mars’s slide with the hat etc. At the end we put all the moves together and did our own party moves in a circle. The instructors were really nice and we had lots of fun.

Local Tennis coach Michael Donaghy and rising star of Celbridge Tennis Club David introduced pupils from Junior Infants to second class to the game of tennis. The boys were taught some of the skills of tennis and played some simple tennis games. The lessons as always proved popular with all the boys as can be seen in the pictures below. A number of boys have had experience playing tennis but the majority were playing for the first time and Michael was very impressed with the skill levels of the boys.
For more information on Celbridge Tennis Club and coaching available for young and old check out the flyer below. Of particular interest to many might be their Open Day which takes place this Sunday 14th May. On Thursday Shane from GNS Fitness came in to do an exercise class with us.
First we did some warm ups including burpees, high knees and jumping jacks. But that was only the warm up. Then we started the exercises. We did sprints, step ups, bear crawl, bunny hops and wall sits and we did each of those exercises for one minute. After that, we all thought it was over but then we had to do it all again! We were very tired!! At the end Conor Kelly won an I.R.F.U rugby ball and Jake Leach and Matthew Dunne won a homework pass. We all really enjoyed it.
