Yesterday was our Proclamation Day. It was a fantastic ceremony we all felt very proud to be Irish citizens. After the ceremony the Green Schools and the History Squad had the honour of meeting Marian Harkin M.E.P. We discussed about what we have been doing over the past year, she was very interested in our opinions and ideas. We had a long discussion about Donald Trump. We also spoke about her job in politics and what she did before she started politics. She was a teacher for around 20 years! She is now in her third term as a politician. We also spoke about the people she has met such as: The Pope, Obama, Enda Kenny, Mary McAleese, and Mary Robinson. What we liked about Marian is that she listened to our ideas and encouraged us to be active citizens both globally and nationally. She also encouraged us to follow our dreams and never give up.

Proclamation Day took place today to commemorate the Easter Rising of 100 Years ago in 1916. The Irish flag was raised at 10 am following a reading of the Proclamation by Brigadier General Peter O Halloran. Members of the History Squad of Scoil Na Mainistreach read our own modern day Proclamation which all the boys in the school contributed to. Marion Harkin MEP spoke wonderfully to the boys about the flag, our proclamation and the values represented by both. We were priviliged to have in attendance with us today Seamus O Donohoe, Grandfather of Conor, Aidan and Daniel in our school. Seamus' uncle Tom O Donohoe was a founding member of Fianna Éireann and fought during the Easter Rising. He also brought with him a gun used by his Aunt during the Rising. At 12 noon we were treated to a flyover by Andy Muhall of the National Flight Centre in Weston. Andy flew a tricolour from the plane and as he circled the school field boys from 1st to 6th formed the numbers of 1916. Andy took pictures from the plane and these can be seen in the gallery below along with many others which capture the magic of a day that pupils, parents, teachers and everyone present will remember forever. Underneath the Gallery is a video for everyone to recall the days events from start to finish. The school will close on Wednesday 16th March at 12.15pm for St. Patrick’s Day and Easter Holidays. The school will reopen on Monday 4th April.
Under The Willow Tree, a play commemorating The Great Famine written by Mrs Fleming and directed by Ms Hernon had its first outing today in front of classes from 2nd to 6th. Set in North Kildare in the 1840's, the 5th and 6th class boys who star in the play highlight the plight of the ordinary Irish people during one of the darkest periods in our country's history. The second Celbridge Community Games event this year is the Swimming Competition.

Thanks also to the Parents' Association for funding the cost of Drinking Chocolate and other Fairtrade ingredients. Look at the photos and see can you figure out where in the world our bananas came from. We have started to learn the words of Oró Sé do Bheatha Bhaile the famous Irish song written by Padraig Pearse. During the flag presentation next Tuesday all boys in the school will sing it. Below is a version of the song sung by Ronnie Drew and The Dubliners. Underneath is a copy of the words. Boys need to spend a few minutes each night practising what they learned during the day.
Over the past year two ladies called Sharon and Rachel from the Abbey Art Group came in and taught us how to make incredible art. As our last piece of art we all painted on a canvas. Each class had their own theme; Mr. Heffernan’s did “sunflowers”, Mr Bracken’s did “Japanese Bridges” and Mrs. Marken’s did “Evening in Venice”. The winners from each class were; Mr. Heffernan’s – Gangul Sampath, Mr Bracken’s – Andrew Curran and Mrs. Marken – Eavan O’Keeffe. The winners each received a canvas, some acrylic paint and four paint brushes. The overall winner was Eavan O’Keeffe and he will get his name engraved on a perpetual trophy with past winners names. By Eavan O’Keeffe in Mrs. Marken’s class 6th. Pictured with Mrs. Anne Corrigan (Principal) and Mrs. Cathi Fleming (Deputy Principal) are Andrew Curran, Gangul Sampath and Eavan O'Keeffe.
