On Wednesday the 10th we went to the Abbey Playground. We walked down in pairs again. When we got to the playground everyone raced for the hanging basket. It started with about 14 boys and went down to only 3 boys because the teachers came over and told us to get off. There was a pirate ship with a slide. Everyone went down the slide at the same time and it was chaotic but fun. There was a big game of build up and it was great craic. We had lunch after the playground in a big field. We ate our lunch and then played a big soccer match. Then we got some information on the history of the Abbey. Then we walked back to school.

Shrills of excitement from the infants have greeted the arrival of the Big Boys to the various classes to bring them on their laps. The 5th and 6th class boys have been excellent with the younger boys and have shown great understanding, kindness and patience towards them as they jog at various paces around the 400M perimeter.
Long term the pupils are benefiting from taking part in some extra daily physical activity. The laps also act as preparation for the special Scoil Na Mainistreach Parkrun which will take place on the morning of Saturday 27th May in the grounds of Castletown Estate. All boys and their families are invited to turn up and run, jog or walk the 5km route. More details will be announced in the coming weeks. The Better Golf professionals at the GUI Academy at Carton House provided golf lessons to 30 boys from 5th class today in the beautiful sunshine. Boys received instruction in Driving, Short Game and Putting. Coaches Niall , Mark and Ceelan provided the coaching and offered expert tips and advice to the boys to help them improve their game. Many of the boys showed great potential and in the time they were there listened and took on board the advice given to them.
Lessons for children interested in learning the game are available year round at the GUI along with Summer and Easter camps. For anyone interested in finding out more about lessons available check out the Better Golf Website http://www.bettergolf.ie/ One of the highlights of Active Schools Week for the Junior and Senior Infants each year is the soccer skills session with Mr Mulreid. Many of the boys have been lucky to have been coached by Mr Mulreid at his weekly sessions in The Mill in Celbridge. Other boys got to experience his coaching for the first time today and all come away having learned so much. Concentrating on the basic skills of the game, having a good first touch and good technique boys were given lots to take away to practice on their own or with friends on these lovely fine evenings!
One of the aims of Active Schools Week in Scoil Na Mainistreach is to introduce pupils to sporting activities that take place in the area. Our hope is that pupils might find an activity that they would like to take part in throughout their youth and further into adulthood.
One of the most successful sports in recent years in meeting these aims has been Canoeing. Canoeing has been on the Active Schools Week programme in Scoil Na Mainistreach for 8 years now and each year has seen boys and their extended families join and become valued members of our local Celbridge Paddlers Canoe club . Each year the Celbridge Paddlers have been most helpful in providing an introduction to canoeing and this year was no different. Helped by the glorious sunshine which greeted the boys on the canal, club coaches provided instruction alongside the boys in canoes. After a few wobbly starts boys soon got to grips with the paddles and made their way up and down the canal to great cheers of excitement. On return they were treated to some fun games which for many ended up getting properly soaked in the canal. All in all a most memorable morning for all boys. Judging by the comments coming home in the car the Paddlers can expect to see a few new faces on the banks of the Grand Canal in the coming weeks. Huge thanks to Mrs Fleming as always for making this work today as she has done for the last 8 years. Without her enthusiasm days like this would not be possible. Also to the coaches for giving their time, taking days off work to make this possible we are very grateful and look forward to continuing the experience for another group next year.
